Animals

There are lots of animals at camp! We really like that camp gives us so many ways to be around animals and learn about them.

Stables
Bryn and Shay love the horses.  Camp Tecumseh has two large stables (one in for basic horsemanship and one for equestrian campers) and about 65 horses.  During the summer, there is an equestrian program for campers.  We can't wait until we're old enough to do that!  But right now, we really enjoy going on trail rides with retreat groups on the weekends.

Because we like the horses at camp so much, we also like to find out more about them on the computer.  Howrse is one really fun game that helps us learn how to take care of horses.  If you like horses, you should try it!  Our mom had to register us for it, so you will probably need an adult to help you too.

Another one of our favorite websites is Animal-World.  It helps us learn to identify all different kinds of horses (and other animals too!) and teaches us how to take care of them.

Mini-Farm
Camp Tecumseh also has a mini-farm.  It has a pony, an alpaca, a baby cow, a donkey, some pigs, ducks, chickens, goats, sheep, and rabbits.  Campers can go to the mini-farm to learn how to take care of all these animals.  Our counselors teach them about what the animals eat and how to take care of them.  All the animals are really friendly, because they are used to being around kids all the time.  Liam loves the chickens the most, and they are so nice that we can even go inside their pen and help collect their eggs.  Sometimes the camp staff even let us help take the bigger animals for walks so they get their exercise. . . . but we have to be really careful, because some of the animals can be naughty and try to run away!

Working with the animals at the mini-farm makes us really curious to learn more.  One of our favorite websites for learning about animals is Kids Farm.  It has pictures that we can print to color, games that we can play, and lots of video and audio clips to teach us about farm animals.

Nature Center
Camp Tecumseh also has a Nature Center.  It has snakes, turtles, and fish.  Sometimes we get the turtles out of their tanks and let them have races across the floor!  We also think the snakes are really cool, but we know not to touch them without a grown-up.  The Nature Center also has all kinds of cool things to look at and touch, like animal bones and snake skins.  When we want to learn more about animals, we like to go to KidZone or Science Kids.

The Nature Center also has a big bee hive covered in glass.  You can really see all the bees moving around inside it!  We wanted to learn more about the bees after watching them at the Nature Center, so one of our friends from camp showed us Kids Konnect.  It has some really interesting facts about bees, and it also helped us link to lots of other websites about them.  If you are interested in bees but don't have a way to see them up close, we recommend this video:
